# Original Audio vs Trending Audio: Which Gets More Views?

Music reels got more raw views, but at the same length, and against each creator's own average, audio type made no difference. Data + when to use each.

**Short answer:** neither wins on its own. In 1,211 reels IShort users transcribed (Jul-Sep 2026), licensed-music reels had a higher median (289k vs 198k views) but were shorter. At matched lengths the gap shrank, and against each creator's own median both scored 1.0x. Pick audio by format: music for visual reels, original audio for talking ones.

Instagram tags the sound on every Reel in one of two ways: **original audio** (recorded by the creator, shown as "Original audio" plus their username) or a **licensed track** from Instagram's music library. A "trending sound" can be either one: a chart song, or another creator's original audio that took off.

## What IShort's data shows: original audio vs licensed music

We compared 1,211 Reels that IShort users transcribed between July and September 2026: 1,026 with original audio and 185 with a licensed music track. Engagement rate here means (likes + comments) / views.

| Measure | Original audio | Licensed music |
|---|---|---|
| **Reels in the sample** | 1,026 (885 with views) | 185 (148 with views) |
| **Median views** | 198,472 | 289,382 |
| **Median engagement rate** | 3.11% | 3.77% |
| **Median length** | 55 s | 38 s |
| **Views vs the creator's own median** | 1.0x (303 reels) | 1.0x (49 reels) |

The raw median favors music, but the music reels were 17 seconds shorter, and [short reels had higher medians across the whole sample](best-reel-length-for-engagement.html). So we compared reels of the same length:

| Reel length | Original audio: median views | Licensed music: median views |
|---|---|---|
| Under 30 s | 364,965 (n=136) | 351,672 (n=63) |
| 30-59 s | 198,472 (n=337) | 214,392 (n=46) |
| 60-89 s | 166,288 (n=256) | 213,938 (n=31) |

**What this means:** at the same length the gap narrows, and under 30 seconds original audio is level with music. The fairest test compares each creator with themselves: across the 36 accounts with 5+ reels in the sample, reels with either audio type landed at exactly their creator's usual views (1.0x). Audio type alone did not predict a hit.

- Only 2 creators had 2+ reels of each type, too few for a same-creator head-to-head, so we don't publish one.
- **Caveat:** users chose which reels to transcribe, so the sample skews toward reels that already did well. Read these as patterns, not Instagram-wide averages.

## Do trending sounds still boost reach in 2026?

Partly. Every Reel that uses a sound is listed on that sound's audio page, so a rising sound gives new viewers one more way to find you ([Later, Aug 2026](https://later.com/blog/instagram-reels-audio/)). But Instagram has not said trending audio ranks higher. In his September 2026 ranking videos, Adam Mosseri listed what Instagram values beyond engagement: originality, recency, "breaking content" from small creators, and larger AI models. Audio was not on the list ([Social Media Today](https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/instagram-chief-shares-algorithm-insights-and-posting-tips/831326/)).

Timing matters more than the sound. A sound with a few hundred uses is early; one with hundreds of thousands is saturated. And in our sample, music reels did not beat their creator's usual results either.

## Original audio: pros and cons

Original audio is any sound you record or create yourself: voiceover, talking to camera, ambient sound, your own music, or silence with captions. Instagram labels it with your username.

| Pros of original audio | Cons of original audio |
|---|---|
| Builds a recognizable voice and brand | No audio page full of people already browsing that sound |
| Your username is credited when others reuse it | Harder first discovery without an existing audience |
| Full control over the message | More production effort (recording, clean sound) |
| Never goes out of date with a trend | Viewers may scroll past a sound they don't recognize |
| No music licensing or muting risk | Can feel less polished than a studio track |

If your Reel relies on narration, tutorials, commentary or storytelling, original audio is not a choice but a necessity. And when another creator reuses your sound, every one of their Reels points back to your profile.

## Trending sounds: pros and cons

Trending sounds are clips gaining fast adoption: song snippets, movie lines, other creators' voice clips or sound effects. Instagram shows a small upward arrow next to a trending track.

| Pros of trending sounds | Cons of trending sounds |
|---|---|
| Listed on the sound's audio page with every other Reel using it | You compete with every other Reel on that page |
| A familiar sound can stop the scroll | Trends fade within days to weeks |
| Quick to make (no recording needed) | Doesn't build a distinctive voice |
| Good fit for visual, mood-led content | Business accounts can't use many chart songs |
| Easy way to join a format people already know | Licensed music can be muted later |

## When to use original audio

🎓

### Educational content

Tutorials, how-tos and explainers need your voice. Background music can't teach.

📖

### Storytelling

Personal stories, behind-the-scenes and day-in-my-life Reels feel more real in your own voice.

💬

### Opinion and commentary

Hot takes, reactions and industry commentary run on personality.

🌿

### Evergreen content

Reels you want to keep working for months shouldn't depend on a sound that fades.

## When to use trending sounds

✨

### Aesthetic and visual content

Fashion, travel, food and lifestyle Reels with no voiceover can borrow the mood of a song.

😂

### Comedy and lip-sync

The joke often comes from the contrast between the sound and your take on it.

🎯

### Joining a format early

A sound with a few hundred uses that fits your niche is worth a quick, on-brand version.

🔄

### Repurposing clips

Photos or b-roll that need no narration become a Reel with one well-chosen track.

## Can you mix both? A simple hybrid plan

Yes, and most creators should. Map audio to your content pillars instead of picking one side. For a fitness creator, that could look like this:

- **Workout tutorials** - original audio voiceover to explain form
- **Transformation montages** - a trending or library track
- **Nutrition tips** - original audio, because they need explanation
- **Gym motivation clips** - music that matches the energy

You can also record a voiceover and add a library track quietly underneath in Instagram's editor. Then let your own numbers decide the ratio: post 10+ reels of each and compare them, or run a cleaner [A/B test of two Reels](instagram-reels-ab-test.html).

## How to find trending audio on Instagram

1. **Professional dashboard** With a creator or business account, open your Professional dashboard and look for the Trending audio list.
2. **Music picker** Start a Reel, tap the music icon and open Trending to browse the current top tracks.
3. **The upward arrow** While scrolling Reels, an arrow next to the track name marks a rising sound. Tap it to see how many Reels already use it.

More detail in our guide to [finding the best trending audio for Reels](best-trending-audio-instagram-reels.html). If you heard a song in someone's Reel and want its name, see [how to find the song or audio in any Instagram Reel](find-song-audio-in-instagram-reel.html).

## What counts as original audio on Instagram?

Original audio is any sound recorded by the Reel's creator rather than pulled from Instagram's music library. Film with your phone's microphone and don't add a track, and the Reel's audio is original audio labeled with your username. Others can reuse it with "Use audio", and your name is credited on their Reels.

To spot it, look at the bottom-left of a Reel: "Original audio" next to a username means original audio; a song title and artist means a library track. Tapping the label opens the audio page with every Reel that used it.

## Business accounts and the music catalog restriction

Instagram limits business accounts to a smaller library of music cleared for commercial use, so many chart songs you see on personal profiles won't show up when you search from a business profile ([Kompozy, Aug 2026](https://kompozy.io/roundups/trending-instagram-sounds-2026)). Brands get around it with original audio or the royalty-free tracks, and many solo creators use a creator account instead.

## Why music can disappear from a Reel

A licensed track can be muted after you post, for example when a rights holder files a claim or a song leaves Instagram's catalog. The video stays up but plays silent. Audio you recorded yourself can't be pulled that way, which is one more reason to keep evergreen Reels on original audio.

## What Instagram said about originality in 2026

On 31 December 2025 Adam Mosseri wrote that raw, unflattering images are, for now, a signal that content is real, and that Instagram must "continue to improve ranking for originality" ([The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/news/852124/adam-mosseri-ai-images-video-instagram)). On 30 April 2026 Instagram extended its originality rules from Reels to photos and carousels: accounts that mostly re-upload other people's work are no longer recommended ([Instagram for Creators](https://creators.instagram.com/blog/rewarding-original-creators-on-instagram)).

These rules are about who made the video, not which soundtrack you picked. A library song on your own footage is still your content. Adding your own voiceover to someone else's clip is one of the edits Instagram lists as making it original. [Read how the AI content label works](/instagram-ai-content-label.html).

## Audio strategy by niche

| Niche | Lean toward | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Food | Original audio | Sizzles, chopping and narration; music for reveals |
| Fitness | Mix | Voice for form coaching, music for montages |
| Finance and education | Original audio | Talking-head explanations lose meaning over music |
| Fashion and beauty | Trending music | Outfits, hauls and GRWM run on mood |

## Common audio mistakes on Instagram Reels

- **Using a sound too late.** If every third Reel in your feed uses it, the early window has closed.
- **Bad sound on original audio.** Background noise and uneven volume make people scroll before your point lands. Record in a quiet room.
- **Forcing trends that don't fit.** A dance sound on a finance tip confuses your audience.
- **Never testing.** Audiences change. Keep a share of your Reels for audio experiments.
- **Deciding by feel.** Check which audio type your best Reels actually used before you plan the next batch.

**Methodology:** 1,227 Reels transcribed by IShort users and captured 17 Jul-27 Sep 2026 (1,026 original audio, 185 licensed music, 16 unknown; 624 accounts). Views and likes are public counts at capture time. "Vs the creator's own median" uses the 36 accounts with 5+ reels with views (355 reels). Users chose which reels to transcribe, so the sample skews toward successful reels. Aggregate figures only; no creator is named.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is original audio or trending audio better for Instagram Reels?

Neither wins by default. In IShort's sample of 1,211 transcribed reels, licensed-music reels had higher raw median views but were shorter; at matched lengths the gap narrowed, and against each creator's own median both scored 1.0x. Use music for visual, mood-led reels and original audio when you talk, teach or tell a story.

### Do trending sounds get more views on Instagram Reels?

They can add discovery, because every Reel that uses a sound is listed on that sound's audio page. Instagram has not said that trending audio ranks higher, and in IShort's sample music reels performed at their creator's usual level (1.0x). Use a sound early and only when it fits your niche.

### What counts as original audio on Instagram?

Any sound the Reel's creator recorded instead of picking from Instagram's music library: a voiceover, talking to camera, ambient sound or your own music. Instagram labels it "Original audio" with your username, and when other people reuse it, your name is credited on their Reels.

### Can business accounts use trending songs on Reels?

Often not. Instagram limits business accounts to a smaller library of music cleared for commercial use, so many chart songs do not appear. Original audio and the royalty-free library are the safe options, which is one reason many solo creators use a creator account instead.

### How can I see which audio type works for my account?

Install the free IShort Chrome extension, open your Reels tab or a competitor's, and sort the reels by views. IShort marks each reel as original audio or licensed music, and its analytics slides compare the two, so you see your own split instead of a generic average.
