Two numbers matter: how long a Reel can be, and how long people will actually watch. Below are Instagram's 2026 limits, our data from 981 creator reels, how it compares with other studies, and a quick way to find the length that works for your account.

✓ Fact-checked & updated Oct 2026

How long can Instagram Reels be in 2026?

Limit2026 value
Maximum length in the app20 minutes (one or several clips)
Recommended to new audiencesOnly Reels of 3 minutes or less
Reels over 3 minutesMostly seen by people who already follow you

Source: Instagram Help Centre. Instagram raised the limit from 90 seconds to 3 minutes in January 2025 (Social Media Today), so older "90-second" advice is out of date. More on how long Instagram Reels can be.

What IShort's data shows: reel length vs views

We looked at 981 Reels with a known length (578 accounts) that IShort users transcribed between July and September 2026. Engagement rate (ER) means (likes + comments) / views; "vs own median" compares each reel with its creator's usual views.

Length (reels)Median viewsMedian ERVs own median
Under 30 s (200)352,7363.08%0.96x (n=44)
30-59 s (388)201,5923.13%1.0x (n=121)
60-89 s (291)169,1773.35%1.0x (n=106)
90-120 s (102)175,1673.78%too few (n=28)

What this means: across the whole sample, shorter reels had higher median views, while longer reels had slightly higher engagement rates. But when we compared each reel with its own creator's usual views (36 accounts with 5+ reels), every length landed at about 1.0x. The same creator did about as well at 20 seconds as at 70. Length was not what made a reel take off.

  • Why the raw gap? It most likely comes from differences between accounts: the accounts posting the shortest reels got more views overall. Within the same account, length didn't move the needle.
  • Caveat: users chose which reels to transcribe, so the sample skews toward reels that already did well. Read these as patterns, not Instagram-wide averages.

Finer length buckets

LengthReelsMedian views
Under 15 s49616,287
15-29 s151283,052
30-44 s189134,406
45-59 s199230,253
60-89 s291169,177
90-120 s102175,167

The curve isn't a straight line: 45-59 s beat 30-44 s. That's another sign that topic and format drive views more than the stopwatch does.

Why other studies say 45-60 seconds

Socialinsider analysed 9.77 million Reels from brand accounts (1K-1M followers, January-June 2026) and found 45-60 seconds had the highest engagement rate (0.35%) and median views (10,374), more than double Reels under 30 seconds (Socialinsider).

That's a different sample: brands, not creators, and all their Reels rather than the ones that did well. Put together, the honest conclusion is that no length wins on its own. What wins is a Reel that holds people for as long as it runs.

Does reel length affect the Instagram algorithm?

Indirectly. Watch time is one of the three signals Adam Mosseri says matter most, with likes and sends (Social Media Today), and Instagram's most important Reels predictions include whether you'll watch a Reel all the way through (Instagram). Length matters in two ways:

  • The hard cut-off: over 3 minutes, a Reel isn't recommended to new audiences.
  • Holding attention: a 20-second Reel people finish and replay beats a 60-second Reel they leave at second 8. A long Reel only pays off if every section earns its place.

When long wins

Teaching, stories and reviews, where the extra time is the value. Add a small payoff every 10-15 seconds.

Methodology: 981 Reels with a known length (578 accounts) among 1,227 transcribed by IShort users and captured 17 Jul-27 Sep 2026; the longest was 120 s. "Vs creator's own median" uses the 36 accounts with 5+ reels with views; groups under 30 reels are marked too few. Users chose which reels to transcribe, so the sample skews toward successful reels. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best length for Instagram Reels in 2026?

There is no single best length. Aim for the shortest version that tells the whole idea, usually 15-60 seconds, and keep it under 3 minutes so Instagram can recommend it to new viewers. In IShort's data, short reels had higher median views, but each creator's reels did about as well at any length.

How long can Instagram Reels be in 2026?

You can record and edit Reels up to 20 minutes long in the Instagram app. Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences, so they mostly reach people who already follow you.

Do shorter Reels get more views?

In IShort's sample of 981 reels, reels under 30 seconds had a median of 352,736 views versus 169,177 for 60-89 seconds. But compared with each creator's own median, every length landed at about 1.0x, so the gap reflects which accounts post short reels more than length itself.

Does reel length affect the Instagram algorithm?

Indirectly. Watch time is one of the three signals Adam Mosseri says matter most, and Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences. Within that limit, a Reel people finish beats a longer one they abandon, whatever its length.

How many words fit in a 30- or 60-second Reel?

Creators in IShort's sample spoke at a median of 3.4 words per second, so a 30-second Reel fits about 100 words and a 60-second Reel about 200. The median English script was 166 words.
