Quick answer: Accounts reached is the number of unique accounts that saw your post, Reel or story on screen at least once. One person seeing it five times counts as 1 account reached but 5 views. In 2026 Insights, Instagram labels this number Viewers; views count every play or display, repeats included.

Reach is private to the account owner. On any public profile you can see views, likes and comments, and IShort (free Chrome extension) sorts every Reel by views so you can compare them.

Accounts Reached Meaning: Who Counts as "Reached"?

An account counts as reached the first time your content appears on its screen. For Reels, Meta adds "whether or not your reel was played", so a Reel someone scrolled past still counts once.

  • Unique accounts: each Instagram account counts once, however many times it sees the content.
  • Followers and non-followers: it isn't "new people" only. Instagram splits reach into followers and non-followers, which shows how far a post was recommended.
  • Per post or per date range: a post's reach keeps growing while it is shown. Account reach counts each account once for the range you pick, so you can't add up the reach of separate posts.
  • An estimate: Meta labels it "estimated and in-development", so small daily changes are noise.

Accounts Reached vs Views vs Impressions: What's the Difference?

Views count every play or display; accounts reached (Viewers) counts each account once. If one account watches your Reel five times, Insights shows 5 views and 1 viewer, so views are almost always higher.

Metric (2026 label) What it counts Repeats count? Status
Viewers (was Accounts reached) Unique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once No Current
Views Times your content was played or displayed; for Reels, each start or replay Yes Primary metric since Aug 2024
Impressions Times your content was on screen Yes Retired, replaced by Views
Plays Times a Reel started playing Yes Relabelled Views in Aug 2024
Accounts engaged Unique accounts that liked, commented, saved or shared No Current
Interactions Total likes, comments, saves and shares Yes Current

Divide views by viewers to get views per account. Close to 1 means most people saw it once; a higher number means people re-watched or the Reel looped. Accounts engaged against accounts reached shows how many of the people you reached reacted: see what a good Instagram engagement rate is in 2026.

Is Accounts Reached Now Called Viewers? (2024-2026 Timeline)

Yes. If you can't find "Accounts reached" in your Insights, it hasn't gone away: Instagram renamed it. Here is how the labels changed.

When What changed Source
Aug 2024 Views becomes the primary metric for Reels, live, photos, carousels and stories. Reels plays are relabelled views, and repeat views count. Social Media Today
Apr 21, 2025 Meta retires impressions for all API versions; views replaces it. Meta for Developers
Aug 2025 Instagram replaces the "Accounts reached" graph and label with Viewers. Social Media Today
Oct 2026 Meta's Help Center lists Views, Viewers, Interactions and Accounts engaged for posts and Reels. Instagram Help Center

Meta's API still returns reach under the title "Accounts reached", which is why many analytics tools and older guides still use the old name. Same number, new label.

Where to Find Accounts Reached (Viewers) in the 2026 App

Any public account can see it, personal or professional (Business or Creator). If you switch to private, you lose access to insights.

For one post or Reel

  1. Go to your profile and open the post (Reels are in the Reels tab).
  2. Tap View insights under it.
  3. Read Viewers (accounts reached) alongside Views and Interactions.

For your whole account

  1. On your profile, tap Professional dashboard (personal accounts: Your dashboard). Not there? Open Settings and activity and tap Insights under For professionals.
  2. Pick a preset range (7, 14, 30 or 90 days) or a custom range within the past 90 days.
  3. Tap an insight, starting with Views, for the detailed numbers. The (i) in the top right shows Meta's definition of each metric.

On a computer: instagram.com → Dashboard in the left menu → Insights → Account or Content. Audience demographics appear once you reach more than 100 accounts. Our guide to viewing Instagram Insights walks through every screen.

What Is a Good Accounts Reached Number?

Compare reach with your follower count. Reach rate = accounts reached by a post ÷ followers × 100. Socialinsider's 2026 study of 872,075 brand-page posts (January 2025 to August 2026) found these organic averages on Instagram:

Followers Average reach rate What that looks like
1K-5K6.65%3,000 followers → about 200 accounts reached
5K-10K5.75%8,000 followers → about 460
10K-50K5.50%25,000 followers → about 1,375
50K-100K4.50%75,000 followers → about 3,375
100K-1M3.50%250,000 followers → about 8,750

By format, carousels averaged 4.50%, Reels 4.10% and images 4.00%, and Instagram's average reach rate fell 14% year over year. These are brand pages, so a creator's numbers can differ, and reach can even exceed your follower count because it includes non-followers.

The most useful benchmark is your own median: note the usual reach of your last 10 posts and judge each new one against it. For views and engagement by niche, see Instagram Reels benchmarks by niche and follower count.

Why Did My Accounts Reached Drop?

  1. A shorter range or fewer posts: account reach counts each account once per date range, so 7 days against 30 days, or a 2-post week against a 5-post week, looks like a drop. Compare equal ranges.
  2. Recommendation eligibility: content that breaks Instagram's Recommendation Guidelines isn't recommended to non-followers. Professional accounts can check this in Account Status.
  3. Weaker signals: Adam Mosseri says the top ranking signals are watch time, likes and sends, and tells creators to watch "average watch time, likes per reach, and sends per reach". A weak opening means fewer new viewers.
  4. Reposted content: since April 2024 Instagram replaces reposted content in recommendations with the original, so reposts reach fewer non-followers.

If reach has collapsed to almost zero, run the checklist in why your Reels get no views.

How to Increase Your Accounts Reached

1

Win the first seconds

Watch time is one of the 3 signals Mosseri named. Open with the payoff, not an intro.

2

Make it worth sending

Mosseri says sends weigh slightly more with people who don't follow you. Tutorials, lists and relatable takes get forwarded.

3

Test with trial reels

Trial reels are shown to non-followers first, so you can test an idea on new viewers before your followers see it.

4

Use 5 precise hashtags

Five is Instagram's limit per post. Pick niche tags from the hashtag guide and post at your best time.

See Which Reels Reached the Most People

IShort sorts every Reel on any public account by views and shows each one's multiple of the account average, so you can spot what your breakout Reels have in common. (Reach itself stays in Insights.)

Can You See Accounts Reached on Someone Else's Account?

No. Reach is shown only to the account owner. Instagram doesn't make it public, so no outside tool can read another account's reach. What anyone can see on a public account is views, likes and comments per Reel.

That is the data IShort works with: sort any public profile's Reels by views, spot the outliers and export them to CSV. To track your own Reels without switching account type, see how to track Reels without a business account.

What does accounts reached mean on Instagram?

It is the number of unique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once. Each account counts once, however many times it saw the post. In 2026 Insights, Instagram shows this number as Viewers.

Is accounts reached the same as views?

No. Views count every time your content is played or displayed, including repeats by the same account. Accounts reached (Viewers) counts each account once, so views are almost always higher.

Instagram renamed it. From August 2025 the Accounts reached label was replaced by Viewers. Tap View insights under a post or Reel, or open Insights in your dashboard, and look for Viewers.
